Robotic surgery makes it easier for the surgeon to perform a lymph node dissection. In certain scenarios, a lymph node dissection is required in addition to removal of the kidney.
Treatment for early kidney cancer
The lymph nodes of the kidney and ureter are located on and next to the great blood vessels of the body, the aorta and vena cava. The robotic technique is especially helpful in ureteral surgery where the surgeon needs high precision to avoid nearby blood vessels, sew back together the healthy ureter ends with the proper fit and tension, and properly insert the stents and drains.
In ureterolysis for retroperitoneal fibrosis, the ability of the tiny robotic instruments to work at virtually any angle makes it much easier versus conventional laparoscopic equipment to detach all fibrotic adhesions from the ureter. In all ureteral procedures, the enhanced optics and greater dexterity provided by the robotic system allow the surgeon to accomplish all these technically demanding tasks—all performed deep inside the abdomen—with more certainty.
Robotic Surgery for Ureteral Conditions - Temple Treatments & Services - Philadelphia, PA
Although uncommon, possible complications from robotic ureteral surgery are the same as for open surgery, mainly leakage from the ureter, infection, bleeding, and recurrent obstruction leading to need for another repair. Temple surgeons are highly experienced in robotic-assisted treatment of ureteral conditions.
Our surgeons routinely perform complex procedures that are not offered and cannot be performed anywhere else in the region. Our experience often allows us to perform robotic procedures for patients with special needs or risk factors such as Jehovah's Witness patients or those with obesity, older age, previous ureteral or kidney surgery, or certain other medical conditions who might not otherwise be eligible for surgery.
